The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Fougere Bergamot arrived in 2021 as part of Dossier's growing library of accessible compositions. The scent is inspired by Versace's Dylan Blue, taking that crisp profile as its starting point. The result is a deliberate reading of what a contemporary fougere can be: bergamot and grapefruit up top, an aquatic heart that cools the lavender, and a base of ambroxan and tonka bean that keeps the whole thing grounded. The composition opens with a brisk burst of citrus, sharp and unsweetened, where the grapefruit's bitterness gives the bergamot something to push against.
Fougere Bergamot uses ambroxan where older fougeres might have leaned on oakmoss, a synthetic molecule that delivers a warm, slightly musky character with a clean, almost saline edge. The aquatic accord in the heart does something else interesting: it doesn't sit on top of the lavender like decoration, it cuts through it, keeping the herbal notes from turning heavy or one-dimensional. The interplay between the cool aquatic note and the warm lavender creates a kind of breathing quality, where the fragrance opens and contracts on the skin rather than holding a single fixed expression.
The evolution
The first 20 minutes belong entirely to grapefruit and bergamot, sharp and unsweetened, with a green fig leaf underneath that adds a vegetal snap. The citrus is loud but not aggressive, more like the moment you step outside after a shower. Somewhere around the 30-minute mark, the aquatic note surfaces, and the lavender starts pulling it into something cooler and more mineral. This is the phase that surprises people, because for a few minutes the fragrance stops smelling like a fougere and starts smelling like wet stone. The geranium arrives in the second hour, giving the heart a faint rosy edge that keeps the composition from feeling purely clean. The geranium here is not a full floral gesture; it's more of a whisper, a slight turn toward warmth that softens the mineral coolness without replacing it. By hour three, the ambroxan and tonka bean take over.
Cultural impact
Fougere Bergamot sits within Dossier's broader project of making designer-inspired compositions available at a fraction of the original price. The fragrance lands squarely in the fresh-aquatic fougere category, a subgenre that has found a strong audience among buyers looking for versatile, everyday scents. The composition is built around the interplay between citrus brightness and aquatic coolness, with a herbal lavender core that grounds the brighter notes.
