Why it exists.
The beginning
Tam Dao takes its name from the holy forests of Vietnam, a reference to memory and place that defines Diptyque's approach to fragrance. This 2019 limited edition brought the Tam Dao composition to a new audience in EDT form, packaged in a collector's bottle. The concept: capture the essence of a landscape, not recreate it literally. The forests are gone, but the sandalwood remains. This is memory as olfactory experience.
The composition earns its name through restraint. Three materials anchor everything: Mysore sandalwood, Italian cypress, and myrtle. The sandalwood provides the creamy, slightly spiced foundation, velvety, milky, warm. The cypress and myrtle provide the cool counterpoint: green, aromatic, almost balsamic. These two forces don't compete. They frame each other. Every other note in the pyramid exists to amplify or smooth this central tension. It's a study in focus.
The evolution
The cypress-myrtle opening hits cool and aromatic, like stepping into a shaded forest clearing. Green without being sharp. Within the first hour, the sandalwood begins its slow emergence, creamy and warm, taking over like light shifting through trees. The rose note appears briefly, adding softness before the cedar arrives to deepen the woods. By hour two, you're in the heart: creamy sandalwood and cedar, warm and intimate. The base settles into palisander rosewood, amber, and white musk, powdery, warm, close. On fabric, it can last into the next day. The sandalwood never fully disappears. It just becomes quieter, like a memory you stop noticing until someone mentions it.
