The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Sacred Wood Anniversary Edition arrived in 2022 as By Kilian marked fifteen years. The occasion called for a definitive statement, and Calice Becker delivered one. The brief was deceptively simple: a homage to exceptional woods. But which wood? The composition circles back to sandalwood, specifically Mysore's most coveted variety, returning to it again and again until the material reveals everything it contains. This is not a linear fragrance. It breathes, it softens, it asks to be reconsidered.
What makes Sacred Wood unusual is the lactonic warmth threaded through its woody heart. Milk accord, copaiba balm, tolu balsam, these push the sandalwood into territory that reads as intimate rather than traditional. The apricot note never announces itself. It lingers in the background, a whisper of stone fruit warmth against warm balsam. The result is a sandalwood that feels tender rather than austere, creamy rather than sharp. That quality, the milk note softening what could otherwise be masculine wood, is what separates this from a standard woody fragrance.
The evolution
The opening begins with earthy-spicy clarity. Carrot seed and ambrette seed create a grounded entrance that reads almost herbaceous at first, a natural opening that clears the way. Then the sandalwood arrives. Not all at once. It builds, softens, becomes the central element. The heart phase unfolds with creamy, warm, layered complexity. Mysore sandalwood with Dominican amyris and Atlas cedarwood. Copaiba balm adds a faint animalic warmth. Tolu balsam holds it all together. The drydown is where this fragrance earns its name. A malty milky vapor. The wood is still present, but it has become something intimate. Close. Almost edible. Moderate sillage throughout, which means the trail is intimate rather than architectural. The drydown leaves a warm sandalwood memory that lingers, still lactonic, still soft, still distinctly present on the skin.
Cultural impact
Sacred Wood represents a distinctive approach to sandalwood in contemporary perfumery. The milk-warmth in the drydown stands as one of its most notable characteristics, creating a sensation that feels both comforting and unusual. The sandalwood here presents itself with a softness that suggests personal attachment rather than performance. The 15th anniversary release underscores the fragrance's importance within the By Kilian collection. Calice Becker's collaboration with the house is evident in the way the fragrance is composed, with each element placed with precision and care.
