Why it exists.
The beginning
Vellichor Geist arrived in 2022 as part of DeMer's first public wave of limited releases. The name borrows "vellichor," a word associated with the strange, wistful atmosphere of a used bookstore: paper, dust, the phantom scent of other readers' afternoons. DeMer treats scent as a way to bottle a feeling most people sense but can't quite articulate. Deric Metzger composed the formula, translating an editorial brief into a composition that threads whiskey warmth through rose, smoke, and old paper. The listed notes include Italian bitter orange, clove, rose, birch tar, choya ral, smoke, whiskey, wine barrel, benzoin, sandalwood, vanilla, musk, and aged paper. It is the kind of fragrance that earns its literary title by smelling exactly like the word it's named for.
What's interesting here is the material collision. Birch tar, choya ral, and smoke do the heavy lifting on the atmospheric side, while whiskey, wine barrel, and clove contribute a boozy, almost edible warmth. The rose notes, several listed in the official breakdown, hold the whole thing together with a sweetness that keeps the smoke from tipping into campfire territory. Aged paper appears as both a note and a concept, anchoring the composition in the dry, slightly sweet smell of lignin breaking down over decades.
The evolution
The first 30 minutes arrive with a jolt. Italian bitter orange cuts sharp through clove and the immediate warmth of whiskey, almost cologne-like, then the wine barrel note deepens and darkens that citrus into something that smells like the rind of an orange dropped into a snifter. Rose enters quietly around the 20-minute mark, sweetening the smoke from birch tar before the smoke has a chance to dominate. By the one-hour mark, the composition has settled into a warm, resinous plateau: benzoin and choya ral doing the slow, sticky work, vanilla turning soft and powdery underneath, and that aged paper accord threading everything together like a forgotten letter.
