Why it exists.
The beginning
Cobblestone Phantoms arrived in 2022 as part of DeMer Parfum Limited's debut wave. Deric Metzger composed the formula. The title points to a specific atmosphere, rain on historic streets, the echo of footsteps that aren't there, warmth leaking from old stone walls. It is a fragrance built around atmosphere rather than character, mood rather than figure. The composition leans into a damp, mineral sensibility from the very first spray, treating wet stone and rain-soaked earth as the central architecture of the scent rather than a passing accent. Metzger's approach here is less about projecting a confident personality and more about conjuring a place, letting the olfactory elements layer into something you inhabit rather than simply wear.
What separates Cobblestone Phantoms from a standard oriental is its commitment to the petrichor accord, the molecule that captures the smell of rain hitting dry earth. Combined with rain notes and an earthy base, it pulls the composition into territory that feels less ornamental and more grounded in actual weather. The inclusion of castoreum, an animalic note traditionally associated with leather, adds a human warmth without tipping into sweetness. Tonka bean and vanilla soften the edges, lending a creamy undertone that rounds out what could otherwise read as too austere.
The evolution
The opening belongs to rain. Petrichor and lavender hit together, cool and mineral, and for a moment it smells less like perfume and more like stepping outside mid-shower. Bergamot gives it a brief lift, a flash of citrus that confirms you're wearing something and not standing in actual weather. Then the warmth arrives. Cinnamon and clove build slowly underneath, and guaiac wood adds a dry smoke that grounds everything. As the composition develops, it settles into its core identity: amber and tonka bean wrapped around cedar, with castoreum giving the whole thing a faint animal pulse that lives just under the sweetness. The castoreum doesn't announce itself loudly, it hums beneath the surface, lending a leathery undertone that keeps the sweetness from becoming cloying.
