The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
David Bustamante founded his fragrance line in 2012, translating his identity as a Spanish pop artist into scents that echo personal rhythm and authenticity. Esencia in Blue specifically draws from the open skies and sea-salted air of the Mediterranean coast where the artist spent his formative years. Claire Liégent composed the fragrance with this emotional clarity as the brief, capturing the crystalline blue of coastal light rather than literal beach imagery.
The choice of Lavender, Cardamom, and Iris for the heart reflects a deliberate balance between aromatic tradition and modern restraint. Lavender provides a recognizable masculine-herb quality, Cardamom introduces an unexpected warmth that nods to spice-forward compositions, and Iris adds powdery sophistication that elevates the overall structure. For the base, Ambergris, Cedarwood, and Sandalwood were selected to extend the coastal theme through warm, creamy woods rather than marine notes, ensuring longevity and depth.
The evolution
The opening notes establish immediate citrus-fruity brightness. Lemon and Grapefruit create a zesty first impression, while Green Apple adds crisp fruitiness and Honey delivers a smooth sweetness. Over the first half hour, the scent begins its shift as Lavender rises in the heart. Cardamom arrives quietly, warming the herbal character without stealing focus. Iris settles in with its powdery coolness, bridging the gap between the bright top and deeper base. The drydown brings the final transformation. Ambergris lends animalic ambery warmth, and Cedarwood grounds the composition with dry woodiness. Sandalwood rounds the base with creaminess that prevents harshness, leaving a lingering finish that reflects the lasting emotional clarity of Mediterranean coastline.
Cultural impact
Since its 2017 debut, Esencia in Blue has become a go‑to summer staple for fans of the singer, often mentioned alongside other Spanish‑inspired aquatic colognes in lifestyle blogs. Its fresh, musical vibe resonates with listeners who seek a scent that feels like a soundtrack to a sunny day.
