The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2019, Pascal Gaurin returned to the Eternal question. The original Eternity for Men had answered it in 1989, a fougère built on lavender and amber, intended as a classic aromatic scent. Thirty years later, the approach was to strip ceremony without losing conviction. Gaurin reached for ozonic notes and sage to introduce an almost-electric freshness at the opening, clean and immediate, then grounded the heart in lavender and cypress to maintain the original's aromatic soul. Sage and ozonic elements provide a bright, contemporary character that feels fresh and present, while the aromatic heart remains anchored in lavender and cypress. Suede appears in the base, adding texture without warmth, presence without weight, giving the fragrance a tactile quality that lingers close to the skin.
The suede is what makes this interesting. Gaurin layered it over cypriol oil and ambergris, which gave the leather a mineral, almost cool quality that contrasts with the warm herbaceous heart above it. The result is a fragrance that feels both familiar and tactile. The lavender announces itself with presence, the suede lingers with a persistent, close-to-skin quality. Orris root appears in the base to add a quiet powdery iris note, subtle but effective, preventing the composition from becoming too heavy or too dark.
The evolution
The opening is all crisp green air. Ozonic notes hit first, bright, clean, the kind of freshness that arrives before you expect it. Apple adds a faint sweetness underneath, barely there, just enough to keep the citrus from sharpening too far. Sage arrives within minutes, herbal and cool, and the ozonic accord maintains its presence with a slightly electric quality, like the air before a storm. The heart belongs to lavender. It doesn't rush in; it waits until the citrus fades, then arrives fully formed, the kind with depth and aromatic fullness. Geranium adds a subtle floral edge that prevents the lavender from becoming one-note. Nutmeg and cypress provide structure: the nutmeg adds warmth, the cypress adds that characteristic fougère backbone the original Eternity was built on. This is where the fragrance earns its name, the lavender is not just a note, it is the argument.
Cultural impact
The 2019 flanker offers a fresh take on the original Eternity. Ozonic notes and Pamplezest give the opening a contemporary character that feels distinctly different from the 1989 version, while the aromatic heart preserves the qualities that made the original recognizable. The suede in the base adds a textural dimension that provides presence and persistence. For someone returning to the Eternity name after years away, this version offers a new chapter that maintains connection to what came before.
