The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Mokoli'i was composed by Bri Beyer for Damask Haus's 2022 State of Aloha collection, a release that positioned this fragrance within a broader thematic set. Not a tropical fantasy, not a sunscreen accord, but an aromatic aquatic that pulls genuine weight from resinous materials. The opening reads as ozonic and citrus-forward, a blood orange note sharpened by ozone and lifted by sea-salt accords that arrive immediately and never fully retreat. Beneath that immediate brightness sits a structural decision: myrrh and benzoin anchoring the drydown, paired with fir needle and oakmoss for green, coniferous bitterness. The perfumer's intent reads clearly in the architecture, an aromatic aquatic that refuses to stay lightweight, pulling depth from incense and resin before the base even registers.
This composition was built to anchor. The combination of myrrh and balsam fir in the heart is the structural backbone of the fragrance, the choice that gives Mokoli'i its unusual weight for the genre. Myrrh brings ancient, almost ecclesiastical depth, while fir needle adds a crisp, coniferous bitterness that reads as tree line rather than forest floor. Pairing those with ozonic and sea notes at the top creates deliberate friction: water above, resin below, and tension in between.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are all about the blood orange, vivid and almost jammy, cut immediately by ozone that reads as wind rather than water. Sea notes follow, but they don't dominate, they provide the air around the citrus. The ozone lifts gradually, and the myrrh and fir needle move into focus as the scent shifts from a coastline to a tree line above one. The fir is sharp and green, the myrrh dark and slightly sweet underneath. This is where Mokoli'i becomes something more interesting than its opening suggested. As the base settles in, ambroxan does its skin-warming, musk-like thing, benzoin adds a low vanilla-adjacent sweetness, and oakmoss grounds everything with a damp, earthy finish. The drydown reads as a warm resinous trace, closer to wood than water, with the benzoin sweetness threading through the oakmoss's green shadow.
Cultural impact
Mokoli'i was composed by Bri Beyer for Damask Haus's 2022 State of Aloha collection, and the fragrance takes its place within that thematic lineup. The name itself is the cultural reference point, inviting wearers to associate the scent with a specific place without the composition needing to dictate that connection literally. The blood orange and ozonic opening reads as sea light on salt spray at a structural level, while the fir, myrrh, and oakmoss base gestures toward the wet basalt and forested ridges one might associate with a specific shoreline.
