The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Some scents announce themselves. Rumor is not one of them. Crafted by Bri Beyer, the perfumer behind Damask Haus, Rumor arrived in 2025 as an exploration of the space between what's said and what lands. The official framing draws from whispered conversations, velvet-draped corridors, the kind of exchange that happens when no one else is paying attention. Beyer built it around maraschino cherry, the kind of note that reads immediately as indulgence, then pulls you into something more layered. Rum. Almond cream. Heliotrope and immortelle doing the slow, sun-warmed work in the middle. This is fragrance as rumor itself, sweet at the surface, shifting in the air.
The composition earns its tension through a specific maneuver: it pairs maraschino cherry, a note that wants to stay bright and sweet, against a base of suede and patchouli that pulls everything downward and inward. The heart introduces rum and immortelle together, a pairing that reads like cooked sugar crossed with dried flowers. Almond cream adds a marzipan weight that keeps the sweetness from floating off. Most cherry-forward compositions chase the fruit and lose the silhouette. Rumor keeps the fruit, then builds a longer shadow underneath it.
The evolution
The opening is pure maraschino. Not fresh fruit, confectionary fruit, the Luxardo jar, dense and syrupy and lacquered, almost candied in its intensity. Then the rum arrives and the composition shifts from confection to cocktail, the boozy warmth undercutting the cherry's sweetness just enough to make it feel intentional. The almond cream and heliotrope bloom together, and that's when the scent stops being about cherry and starts being about texture. Powdery, warm, slightly medicinal from the immortelle, which keeps the sweetness from cloying. As the composition settles, you're wearing something closer to burnt sugar on suede, the cherry now a memory rather than a statement. The base shows up late and stays. Indonesian patchouli adds a dark mineral edge, earthy and cool beneath the warmer tones.
Cultural impact
Rumor offers something specific within the wider conversation around indie fragrances that lean sweet. The composition pairs maraschino cherry with suede, grounded by rum and supported by heliotrope and immortelle, a combination that resists easy classification. The cherry reads as confectionary and syrupy at first, then slowly surrenders its sweetness to the suede accord, which lends a dry, almost upholstered counterpoint. Heliotrope brings its almond-like, powdery warmth, while immortelle contributes a faintly bitter, medicinal edge that keeps the overall sweetness from drifting into cloying territory.
