The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Corey Newcombe, the Adelaide-based nose behind Criminal Elements, built Masquerade around a central tension: bright fruit against austere, dry elements. The 2024 release captures the duality of a masquerade ball, where elegance conceals mystery. Rather than using an obvious citrus or herbal opening, Newcombe chose peach as the initial impression, masking the darker notes beneath a deceptively sweet exterior. The result is a fragrance that announces itself warmly but reveals complexity as it develops on skin.
Newcombe's note philosophy here prioritizes contrast over convention. Peach and smoke might seem like odd bedfellows, but the black tea bridges them, adding an unexpected sophistication. The resinous notes and vanilla don't compete for dominance; instead, they create a layered base that rewards patience. This is a scent meant to be experienced over hours, shifting from playful to mysterious and back to something quietly Intimate.
The evolution
The journey begins the moment Masquerade meets skin. Peach emerges first, soft and almost candied, but within minutes smoke curls through the composition, lifting it away from simple sweetness. Black tea adds a tannic dryness that prevents the scent from becoming heavy, while amber weaves warmth throughout the heart. Resinous notes deepen the middle stage, and vanilla arrives to round the edges, creating a plush, inviting base. By the time the fragrance settles into its drydown, the smoke and tea have faded to a whisper, leaving amber and vanilla as the quiet final act.
Cultural impact
Since its 2024 debut, Masquerade has sparked conversation among niche enthusiasts for its daring contrast of stone‑fruit sweetness and smoky tea. Reviewers note its playful yet mysterious character, describing it as “spilled peach ice tea” turned into a “mysterious waltz.” The scent has found a niche among those who enjoy bright openings that quickly evolve into deeper, brooding dry‑downs, positioning it as a modern, contrast‑driven statement piece.
