The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Clandestine arrived as part of the Riot collection from Clash. The Riot lineup reads like a cast list, and Clandestine takes its place with a brief that announces itself before the first spray: something done on the move, under cover, without leaving a trail. There's an unapologetic swagger baked into the whole proposition, a sense that the juice inside the bottle is supposed to feel like a scene rather than a scent. Pairing spice, white floral, and wood into one composition gives the fragrance a cinematic edge, as if every note were cast for a role. The citrus top lifts the curtain with brightness, the floral heart carries the plot forward, and the woody base closes the scene with weight. It doesn't try to be subtle about any of it, and that lack of apology is arguably the point.
What makes this composition interesting is how openly it plays its hand. Cardamom and cinnamon sit right alongside the rose and orange blossom, refusing the polite separation between spicy and floral that more restrained compositions enforce. Tonka bean bridges those two worlds with a sweetness that reads almost gourmand before the woody base pulls it back to earth. Patchouli and sandalwood in the drydown ground the whole thing with a warmth that keeps the spice from flying off. The accord structure, warm-spicy layered onto woody-musky, is a recognizable architecture but the execution here leans unapologetic rather than restrained.
The evolution
The first spray hits bright and sharp. Lemon and green notes crack open the top with a citrus snap, while cardamom underneath adds a dry, almost peppery heat that catches you off guard. Orange blossom surfaces within the first few minutes, softening the edges but not the spice. Twenty minutes in, the heart takes over. Rose shows up unapologetic, full-bodied rather than powdery, and the cinnamon starts to glow underneath it. Tonka bean weaves through, adding a sweetness that rounds out the floral without turning it saccharine. The interplay between rose and tonka gives the heart phase a plushness that keeps the spice from running away with the composition. Around the two-hour mark, the drydown shifts gear entirely.
Cultural impact
Clandestine makes a deliberate choice in how it presents itself. Rather than borrowing authority from heritage or leaning on abstract minimalism, it leans into a theatrical name and lets the composition do the rest. The warm-spicy-woody architecture gives it a recognizable shape, one that lands clearly without requiring explanation. There's something to be said for a fragrance that announces its mood upfront and then backs it up with actual scent rather than just branding.
