The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Sicily offers a landscape of striking contrasts: volcanic earth meets coastal breeze, mineral intensity softened by green growth. The volcano looms inland, its presence felt in the soil that shapes what grows there. Ciatu draws from this duality, creating fragrances that capture Sicilian locations in wearable form. Founded by Andrea Spatola, the brand name means breath in Sicilian dialect, a commitment to bottling the island's olfactory identity. Taormina represents that mission fully, a fragrance that distills the essence of a place where coast meets height, where mineral meets green, into something that feels both specific and transportive.
Herbs like basil and verbena carpet Sicilian interiors, their green fragrance threading through daily life. Jasmine and neroli define the coastal gardens, their white florals scenting the air near the water. The materials are Mediterranean by geography, and the structure of Taormina mirrors that landscape: citrus brightness at the opening, botanical herbs and white florals forming the heart, then creamy woods settling underneath. The note pyramid doesn't stack in layers, it flows. That citrus sparkle from the opening doesn't vanish.
The evolution
The opening hits sharp, citrus oils, bergamot leading. Bright and tonic, with the grapefruit adding a slightly tart edge that keeps the citrus from feeling sweet. Neroli and jasmine arrive quietly, not announcing themselves but weaving through the composition, their white floral notes adding a delicate sweetness that complements rather than competes with the citrus. The basil and verbena from the heart notes begin to show themselves, an herbal quality that adds sophistication without heaviness. The citrus sparkle doesn't disappear. It becomes part of something wider, evolving as the herbs and florals layer in, maintaining that initial brightness while becoming more complex. By the final hours, vetiver, sandalwood, and vanilla form a warm base.
Cultural impact
Taormina established the house's identity: Sicily as olfactory territory, captured through regional botanicals and cultural specificity. The debut fragrance translated Sicilian locations, traditions, and landscapes into compositions that otherwise might fade from contemporary consciousness. The combination of botanical herbs and white florals gives it a character distinct from mainstream fresh fragrances, with a naturalism that comes from the way the materials interact rather than from any single note dominating.
