The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ernest Beaux created N°22 in 1922 as a light variation of the brilliant N°5. Same aldehydic language, different register, quieter, more intimate, a scent full of grace rather than declaration. For decades it existed as a historical footnote, the number that wasn't the famous one. Then the Les Exclusifs collection brought it back. The 2016 parfum reissue placed this composition back in circulation, not as a revival, but as proof that Beau's hand had already said something worth returning to.
The aldehydes do the work. They don't smell like a flower, they smell like the idea of flowers, the way light smells like the idea of sun. This is the same language Beaux used in N°5, but here the proportions shift. Ylang-ylang and jasmine lead the heart, sweet and almost indolic, with rose and nutmeg deepening the warmth. The base is powder via iris, softened by vanilla and grounded by vetiver. It builds not from single notes but from the blur between them.
The evolution
The aldehydes arrive first, fizzy, bright, almost electric. For the first thirty minutes, it reads sharp, like light through glass. Then the florals settle: orange blossom, neroli, tuberose moving as a single impression rather than distinct notes. The white florals lose their edges, becoming warmth rather than scent. The frankincense appears but doesn't dominate, more memory of incense than actual smoke. By hour three, something shifts. The florals have done their work and the base takes over. This is where it lives: powder, iris, vanilla. A drydown that stays close, intimate, almost tactile. Ten hours later, on fabric and skin, there's still something there, faint, warm, persistent.
Cultural impact
Within Chanel's Les Exclusifs collection, N°22 has earned a dedicated following among fragrance enthusiasts who've moved past N°5's fame and seek something more intimate. The aldehydic signature shares the same olfactory language, but the composition speaks quieter, appealing to those who don't need to announce themselves. Its 2016 reissue brought renewed attention, positioning it as a sophisticated alternative for collectors seeking nuance over notoriety.
