The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
CK One Summer 2007 arrived as part of Calvin Klein's annual limited summer series, each edition a seasonal riff on the original 1994 unisex landmark. Harry Frémont, the nose behind the composition, created a fragrance that opened with bold grapefruit and an almost-startling realism in the watermelon note. The scent carried a crisp, fruity character that felt distinctly summery without leaning into heaviness. The material choice for the watermelon note achieved a juicy quality that avoided the flatness often associated with fruit accords in perfumery. The overall impression was bright and refreshing, with enough citrus brightness to feel energizing in warm weather. It was discontinued with the rest of the summer line but never quite forgotten among collectors who held onto their bottles.
What makes the 2007 structure unusual is how the watermelon note bridges the top and heart. In this composition, it lingers into the heart phase, softening the ginger warmth and orange blossom rather than getting overwritten by them. The combination of water mint and watermelon gives the opening a double-watery effect: cool and juicy simultaneously. The ginger in the heart phase delivers clean, subtle warmth that pairs with the orange blossom's faint floral sweetness, creating a soft middle ground that doesn't overwhelm.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and tart, grapefruit first, mandarin following. The watermelon lands quickly, and for the first twenty minutes there is an almost startling realism to it, like the smell of a cold slice. Mint cools the top notes just enough to keep the citrus from burning out too fast. By the mid-phase, the watermelon softens into something more watery and the ginger reveals itself, clean heat, not spice, and the orange blossom introduces a faint floral sweetness that plays surprisingly well with the fading fruit. As the composition moves into the drydown, the focus shifts toward the base materials. Vetiver and guaiac wood anchor everything into a warm, quiet woodiness. Vanilla appears last, barely, a whisper of warmth under the vetiver that stops the base from reading as austere.
Cultural impact
The CK One Summer series ran from 2004 to 2022, nineteen limited editions, each a seasonal reading of the original. The 2007 vintage stands out in collector memory for its bold citrus and the unusual watermelon note, earning mention in community reviews as the best of the line. The Summer editions brought a collectible dimension to the CK One range, creating something that existed beyond the standard permanent collection. Each edition offered a different seasonal interpretation, with the watermelon-forward 2007 version particularly resonating with those who encountered it.
