The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Byermia, the Australian artisanal house founded by Zannat Lamia and perfumer Ashek Zubayer, has built its reputation on precise chemistry paired with intimate storytelling. For Iris Sura, the narrative draws from a 19th-century tale of a Scottish whiskey maker and his forbidden moments with his wife Elena. That secret love-letter, imagined through scent, became the foundation for this composition. Perfumer Ashek Zubayer took that romantic premise and crafted a fragrance that captures the warmth and quiet intimacy of those stolen moments, translating private longing into olfactory form.
The note selection for Iris Sura reflects a philosophy of warmth and intimacy. Oak and sandalwood provide a reliable, creamy woodiness that feels both grounded and sophisticated. Cacao pod and vanilla create an unmistakable gourmand warmth that evokes comfort and closeness. The pairing of these woody and sweet elements with orris root's powdery elegance and peach's subtle fruitiness results in a fragrance that is warm without being heavy, elegant without being formal. Oud adds just enough mystery to prevent the composition from becoming purely sweet. The result is a scent that feels like a shared secret, intimate and personal, perfect for moments of quiet connection.
The evolution
The fragrance begins without announcement, stepping directly into its heart where seven notes create a layered experience. Oak and sandalwood establish a creamy wooden foundation, immediately warm and present. Cacao pod and vanilla emerge together, creating a chocolate-vanilla warmth that feels like coming home. Oud grounds the composition with smoky resinous depth while orris root adds powdery elegance. Peach threads through as a quiet sweetness. As the hours pass, the blend slowly settles, the woods becoming softer and more skin-like while the vanilla and orris root leave a gentle, powdery whisper. The arc is intimate rather than dramatic, a quiet unfolding rather than a grand performance.
Cultural impact
Since its 2025 release, Iris Sura has sparked conversation among niche enthusiasts for its unapologetic cacao richness and natural orris heart. Reviewers praise its buttery smoothness and strong sillage, noting it stands out in a market where synthetic iris dominates. The limited‑edition run has made it a coveted piece, often exchanged among collectors seeking a genuine, warm woody‑creamy experience.
