The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Part of Blood Concept's Black Collection trio, A, B, and AB, released as the house deepened its reputation for dark, animalic compositions. AB carries the subtitle Liquid Spice, and the name says exactly what it delivers. From the first spray, black pepper arrives with immediate presence, its sharp bite setting the tone for what follows. Clove adds medicinal intensity that commands attention, while violet leaf absolute provides unexpected green sharpness cutting through the heat. The combination creates an opening that announces itself boldly before softening into something more inviting. As the top notes fade, the base reveals its true character: amber warmth wraps around frankincense smoke, myrrh adds resinous depth, and elemi resin layers additional spice atop the existing warmth.
The spicy orientation isn't decorative. Black pepper and clove form the opening deliberately, creating an immediate presence that demands attention. Violet leaf absolute is the unexpected move here, cutting through the heat with green sharpness that most spicy fragrances skip entirely. Then the base takes over: amber warmth emerges slowly, frankincense smoke curls through the composition, myrrh adds depth that grounds the brighter top notes, and elemi resin contributes another layer of spice on top of spice. The structure is honest.
The evolution
The opening hits with immediate spice. The violet leaf absolute reveals itself quickly, green and almost tactile, cutting through the initial aromatic assault like a blade through silk. As the fragrance develops, cinnamon warmth begins to deepen the composition, tonka bean sweetness becomes more pronounced, and the whole structure starts to feel warm and wearable despite the bold start. The middle stages show the fragrance finding its equilibrium, the sharp edges softening as the sweeter, warmer elements come forward. By the drydown, amber and frankincense have taken command. The myrrh adds smoke without darkness, and the elemi resin keeps just enough spice alive to remind you of what this fragrance was built around. The progression moves from assertive opening through a gentler middle period into a warm, lingering base that stays close to the skin.
Cultural impact
Collectors who already own A and B reach for AB when they want spice without darkness. The composition maintains the unapologetic boldness expected from the Black Collection while introducing a different kind of warmth. The subtitle Liquid Spice captures what separates this from its siblings, a focus on aromatic intensity that reads as statement rather than seasoning. Those curious about the house's vision find in AB a way to engage with its more challenging aesthetic on terms that feel more accessible. The warmth doesn't dilute the character, it simply offers a different entry point into what the house builds.
