The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Couture 1 translates Bill Blass's dress archive into scent. Released in 2008 as part of the Couture series, the fragrance draws from the house's fashion heritage, with notes selected to evoke the textures and structures that characterized Blass's original designs. The collaboration with designer Prabal Gurung kept the house's vision intact decades after Blass himself. The composition reflects the same aesthetic language that defined the brand, balancing the precision of tailored fashion with an effortless sensuality that made Blass's work so enduring.
White florals, particularly tuberose, are the house's recurring signature. Here, tuberose doesn't apologize for its amplitude. It arrives heavy, tropical, unapologetic. Orange blossom and peach blossom layer beneath it, adding sweetness without dilution. The clove accord is the quiet anchor: warm spice threaded through the florals so they don't float into pure abstraction. It is lush, but disciplined. The work of a perfumer who understood that excess and elegance aren't mutually exclusive.
The evolution
The mandarin orange opens bright and tart, a quick bite of citrus rind before the florals arrive. The citrus does not linger long. Orange blossom and peach blossom surge forward, with tuberose building behind them like heat off pavement. Clove stays close to the skin throughout, a warmth that prevents the composition from becoming purely sweet. The orange blossom fades first. The mandarin retreats to memory. Tuberose remains, softened, settled, less insistent. The drydown is warmer than the opening suggested. Creamy, animalic-adjacent, close to skin. A workday fragrance that carries into the evening. The progression moves naturally from bright opening through lush florals into a intimate, lingering base that whispers rather than announces.
Cultural impact
Couture 1 arrived in 2008 as part of Bill Blass's collection, released years after the designer's passing. The fragrance captures the house's essence of polished American sportswear translated into scent, structured yet sensual, refined yet approachable. Its white floral heart brings a luminous quality to the composition, offering contrast to deeper, more complex notes that anchor the blend. The opening delivers immediate brightness with citrus tones before revealing richer floral layers underneath. The overall effect is one of sophisticated elegance, capturing the spirit of a brand known for its understated luxury and wearability.
