The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Counting Stars arrived in 2019 as part of Bibliotheque de Parfum's debut collection. Named for the act of looking up, of pausing in an ordinary evening to find something worth noticing, it translates that quiet ambition into scent. The composition moves from crisp citrus through a soft floral heart into a woody base, mirroring the shift from daylight clarity to something more introspective. For the wearer, it asks a simple question: what are you looking at?
Violet is the hinge here. In perfumery, it sits in an awkward middle ground, too soft for a true top note, not present enough to anchor a base. Counting Stars uses it as a bridge instead. The citrus opens bright and direct, but as it fades, violet steps forward and carries the fragrance into its second act. The effect is seamless. By the time cedar and vetiver arrive, the transition feels inevitable rather than sudden. Ambergris adds a subtle saltiness that keeps the drydown from becoming too powdery.
The evolution
The first minutes belong to citrus and blackcurrant, a tart, slightly sour opening that's more honest than elegant. Bergamot and lemon provide the brightness; blackcurrant adds depth and a hint of fruit that keeps things from feeling too clean. Within 20 minutes, the citrus begins to recede and violet takes over, softened by jasmine and cyclamen. This is the fragrance's longest act, lasting 3-4 hours on most skin types. The drydown introduces cedar, vetiver, and a whisper of ambergris, woody, slightly saline, intimate rather than projecting. On fabric, it lasts longer; on skin, expect 6-8 hours with moderate sillage.
Cultural impact
Counting Stars appeals to a specific sensibility: the wearer who notices things but doesn't need to share them. It shares DNA with Byredo's Bal d'Afrique, both move from citrus to woody-powdery, though Counting Stars sidesteps the tagetes intensity some find off-putting in that comparator. The moderate sillage means it won't announce itself across a room, which suits the fragrance's contemplative character. It's a niche fragrance for people who find stronger projections exhausting.
