The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Karine Dubreuil Sereni created Vibrant Hibiscus in 2020 as part of Bentley's Beyond collection, an exploration of how heritage craftsmanship translates into wearable form. The brief was deceptively simple: take the flamboyant hibiscus flower and anchor it with the brand's signature warmth. No beach-vacation tropical. This had to earn the radiator-cap bottle. The challenge with hibiscus is that it reads more like a concept than a material, lush, warm, slightly exotic. Making it the protagonist meant building a structure around it that elevated rather than eclipsed. Dubreuil Sereni reached for what Bentley does well: depth underneath the beauty.
The note pyramid here does something interesting. Most floral fragrances use lily of the valley and jasmine as afterthoughts, freshening agents between top and base. Here, they're doing real work alongside the hibiscus and peony, creating a floral heart that reads as lush without becoming syrupy. The Turkish rose is the quiet engine, adding depth that keeps the brighter florals from feeling one-dimensional. Down at the base, Indonesian patchouli shifts the register. Earthy, warm, slightly dirty, it stops the florals from reading as purely feminine and gives the composition something to grow into as the hours pass.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately. Blackcurrant and mandarin don't wait, they arrive bright, tart, almost sharp. Violet leaf sneaks in for a moment, a green whisper before the florals take over. You get ten minutes of this electricity before the hand-off begins. Then the florals emerge, not all at once but layered: hibiscus first, red peony close behind, Turkish rose threading through with its particular warmth. Jasmine and lily of the valley keep the composition fresh, preventing it from tipping into sweetness. Around the second hour, the sandalwood begins to assert itself. Patchouli arrives last, bringing the earthy counterweight that changes everything. The final hours belong to the base, musk close to the skin, moss adding texture, patchouli lingering long after the florals have faded. On fabric, the drydown can last into the next day. On skin, plan for four to six hours of evolution, with the quietest part still worth wearing.
Cultural impact
Vibrant Hibiscus sits in an interesting position: a bold floral from a house not primarily known for florals. Bentley's fragrance lineup skews warm and woody, leather, spices, woods. This one pivots toward the tropical while keeping the structural integrity the brand demands. For wearers who want hibiscus as a genuine note rather than a marketing hook, this is one of the more committed executions in the accessible luxury range.
