The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Orris Florentina is Beauty Pie's tribute to Tuscan iris root, one of perfumery's most expensive and most patient materials. The ingredient is notoriously difficult to source, with orris butter commanding prices that can rival or exceed even the priciest naturals in a perfumer's palette. This 2025 release keeps the orris front and center, framed by blood orange and bergamot up top, clove and tonka underneath. The opening offers a bright, almost tart citrus lift that feels modern, never sugary, and it sets up the iris rather than competing with it. As the scent settles, the orris reveals its cool, powdery depth, the kind of texture you usually find in fragrances at three or four times the price.
Tuscan iris root carries a powdery, slightly sweet, almost buttery quality that no synthetic fully replicates. The buttery facet is what makes real orris so coveted: it adds a creamy, almost suede-like softness that grounds the composition without weighing it down. Pairing it with clove gives the heart a warm, spiced tension, the gentle heat of the spice playing against the cool, mineral facets of the iris. The incense in the middle adds a church-like stillness, a hushed, resinous quality that feels contemplative rather than heavy.
The evolution
First spray: blood orange and bergamot land clean, a little zest, a little pink pepper sparkle, before they bow out fast. Within ten minutes the orris arrives. Not loud. Not sweet in the candy sense. More like the smell of cold porcelain or rice paper, with clove curling underneath. The incense is the hinge, pulling the composition deeper, slightly smoky, almost meditative. By the two-hour mark, tonka bean and vanilla warm the cedarwood base into something that reads skin-close and slightly sweet. The drydown is where the fragrance becomes most intimate, settling into a soft, woody warmth that clings close to the skin. What hits the clothes the next morning is powder, warm wood, and a ghost of clove, a quiet reminder of the orris that anchored everything hours earlier. The progression from bright citrus to cool iris to warm, resinous base feels deliberate and well-paced.
Cultural impact
Orris Florentina arrives at a moment when iris is having something of a quiet revival in niche and accessible perfumery alike. The note, long associated with classical French perfumery and luxury houses, is showing up in newer compositions that aim to make its distinctive powdery, buttery character available beyond the traditional price ceiling. Orris Florentina leans fully into that sensibility, treating the iris as the star rather than a supporting player. The composition reads as confident and unhurried, the kind of scent that rewards attention and reveals more of itself the longer you wear it.
