The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
La Poésie Des Chiffres, French for "the poetry of numbers," takes its name from something every perfumer knows but few outside the lab talk about. Numbers, formulas, concentrations, cost breakdowns, are the unsexy machinery behind every great scent. This one wears its math lightly. There's a quiet pleasure in reading the note list and understanding what's actually doing the work. The composition itself suggests a perfumer playing with contrast. Marshmallow, a note that drifts somewhere between edible and airy, sits at the heart of the fragrance, something most people associate with sweetness but here comes across as soft and slightly powdered. Mint and lemon open the top, bright and almost herbal in their sharpness, the kind of combination that cuts through sugar and keeps it honest.
What makes this work is the tension between the confection and the aromatics. Marshmallow wants to be a solo act. Clary sage wants to be a cologne. Forcing them into the same composition creates a friction that reads as sophistication rather than confusion. The cocoa blossom sits between them, bridging the herbal and the gourmand without committing to either side. It is a construction choice more than a flavor choice, and that is what separates interesting marshmallow from birthday-cake marshmallow.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are the show. Mint and lemon arrive bright and almost bracing, the marshmallow lurking beneath like something waiting to be confirmed. Then the top notes peel back and clary sage steps forward, green and slightly camphorous, and the marshmallow suddenly has a setting. It is no longer alone. The cocoa blossom arrives next, warm and faintly powdery, and for a stretch the whole thing reads like a sophisticated cologne with a sweet undertone. An hour in, the cedar and sandalwood take over the architecture. The patchouli is there but quiet, more about giving the woods a slight earthiness than announcing itself. The vanilla arrives last, and it does not sweeten so much as soften. The marshmallow at this stage has fully merged with the base. You can no longer point to it as a separate note, but the composition remains gentler and warmer than a straight woody would be. It is what the scent was trying to do all along. The drydown is the longest phase. Cedar-dominant, with vanilla warming it from underneath, the marshmallow a memory.
Cultural impact
La Poésie Des Chiffres sits in the Beauty Pie collection alongside other releases like Le Smash Santal and Une Balade en Forêt, each offering a different point of entry into the brand's fragrance range. What sets this one apart within the line is its marshmallow note, a choice that gives the composition a softness and a touch of playfulness that the others don't carry in quite the same way. The aromatics layered around it, mint, lemon, sage, keep that sweetness from feeling one-note. On skin, the fragrance moves through clear stages.
