The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ryan Hunts worked in commercial direction before moving into perfumery, a transition that brought together his eye for visual composition and a new interest in scent as a medium for storytelling. In 2022, he introduced Pearl Leather through his brand Beach Geeza, a fragrance that captures a specific sensory memory: leather seats heating in the sun, vinyl pool toys releasing their chemical sweetness as chlorine evaporates from warm skin. The composition opens with bright limoncello and ozonic aquatic notes, a fresh almost sterile clarity that cuts through the warmth underneath.
Pearl Leather opens with a fresh almost sterile brightness, limoncello citrus cutting against ozonic water notes that feel clean and expansive. Vinyl adds warmth immediately, a slightly synthetic sweetness that suggests sun-heated polymer rather than the natural materials perfumery typically celebrates. White leather should cool things down, but saffron introduces a medicinal bite that keeps the heart from being too smooth, adding complexity rather than smoothness.
The evolution
The opening announces itself immediately. Limoncello, sugary citrus with a bitter edge, like the rind, cuts through everything with lemon-bright confidence. Aquatic notes add ozone, the smell of ocean air and chlorine that frames the citrus without competing. This phase lasts maybe 30 minutes before the hand-off begins. The heart takes over gradually, not dramatically. Vinyl arrives first, that warm polymer smell of sun-heated seats and pool toys left out too long. It softens the limoncello, rounds off the citrus edge, makes everything feel worn and intimate. White leather slides underneath, creamy and cool against the vinyl's heat. Saffron adds a subtle spice, a metallic whisper that keeps the heart from being entirely smooth. This middle phase lingers, the longest part of the wearing experience, intimate and close to the skin. The drydown begins around the two-hour mark. Amber and vanilla wrap around the remaining vinyl like a warm blanket, their sweetness holding the composition together.
Cultural impact
Pearl Leather occupies an unusual position in the niche fragrance landscape, combining elements that create an unexpected whole. The vinyl note brings a warm polymer quality, sun-heated seats and synthetic sweetness, while limoncello and ozonic water open with bright coastal freshness. Leather and saffron add Mediterranean luxury and complexity, wrapping the more unusual synthetic note in familiar aspirational materials. White leather cools the heart while saffron keeps things from being too smooth, and the base layers amber and vanilla against tobacco and castoreum, sweet warmth against dark dryness and animalic depth.
