The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Extatic arrived in 2014, created by Emilie Bevierre-Coppermann for Balmain Beauty. The name itself tells you where this sits, somewhere between euphoria and equilibrium. Balmain describes the Balmain woman as a mix of lightness and an exceedingly confident character, and Extatic is the olfactory translation of that paradox. Bevierre-Coppermann built this around a crystalline rose and Nashi pear opening, then layered in osmanthus for its unique apricot-tea quality before anchoring everything in cashmere wood and leather. The composition unfolds in layers, with the fruity freshness gradually giving way to warmer woods and subtle leather, creating a fragrance that asks: what does confidence smell like when it doesn't need to prove itself?
The Sharry Baby orchid deserves attention. It's not a standard heart note, it carries a chocolate-honey nuance that gives the jasmine something to play against. Iris provides the powdery structure that keeps the florals from floating away, while cashmere wood and amyris form a warm, close-to-skin base that avoids the heavy handedness of traditional woody accords. There's nooud, no heavy musk, no aggressive animalic note. Just a clean, confident composition that knows what it wants to be and delivers it without drama.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and crystalline, the Nashi pear arrives crisp, almost cold, like biting into a winter pear. Osmanthus follows with its apricot-tea quality, softening the sharpness while keeping things fresh. The rose stays quiet, more suggestion than statement. Then the heart arrives. Jasmine takes the lead, but it's night jasmine, darker, more sensual than its daytime counterparts. The Sharry Baby orchid brings its chocolate-honey undertone, and the iris adds a powdery sophistication that elevates the entire middle. By the base, the fruity brightness has faded and cashmere wood takes over, creating a soft, warm foundation. Amyris adds its own woody warmth, and the leather surfaces last, a subtle Barenia leather note that lingers close to the skin for hours. The drydown is intimate, never loud, never cloying.
Cultural impact
Extatic presents a fruity-floral composition, anchored by the unexpected apricot nuance of osmanthus. The fruity-floral composition appeals to modern women seeking distinctive yet approachable fragrances. Nashi pear adds a crisp, watery freshness that distinguishes it from typical fruity fragrances, while the rose heart brings classic femininity. The fragrance extends Balmain's fashion legacy into personal scent experiences, translating the house's Parisian chic sensibility into olfactory form.
