The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Bella arrived in 2022, and the name says everything. Baldessarini, a house built on masculine distinction, on separating the men from the boys, created a fragrance for the other half of that story. The brief was simple: femininity expressed without apology. Perfumer Mathieu Nardin translated that into a composition of transparent blossoms and the elegant elixir of rose. Not a softer side of the brand. A different one entirely. Bella doesn't apologize for existing. It simply does.
The gardenia-rose pairing in the heart is where Bella earns its name. Gardenia brings a creamy, slightly animalic warmth that rose absolute, richer and more honeyed than its pink cousin, amplifies rather than softens. Together they create a floral heart that feels both lush and controlled. The aquatic base keeps the florals from overwhelming, grounding them in something clean and modern. Orcanox adds a subtle ambrette-like quality that extends the musk without heaviness. It's a well-constructed bridge between the bright opening and the intimate close.
The evolution
The opening is immediate: pink grapefruit and yellow mandarin arrive together, citrus-bright and slightly tart. Marigold sits underneath, its herbal edge keeping the sweetness honest. Blackcurrant appears briefly, a fleeting berry sweetness that disappears before you can name it. This phase lasts about 30 minutes before the florals take over. Gardenia and rose absolute move into the heart, creamy and warm, gardenia's buttery richness softened by the rose's elegant sweetness. Aquatic notes don't announce themselves, they cool the florals, keeping them from becoming heavy. The drydown settles quietly: musk and Orcanox create a clean, skin-close finish. Not a room fragrance. A presence that stays close. On most skin, Bella holds for 6-8 hours, with the final hour becoming almost imperceptible, more memory than smell.
Cultural impact
Bella represents a deliberate expansion for Baldessarini, a house built on masculine codes since its 2002 inception under Werner Baldessarini. The 2022 launch of this feminine fragrance signals a strategic shift, introducing transparent florals and fresh citrus to a brand traditionally anchored in bold masculine compositions. In doing so, Bella participates in a broader industry movement where gender boundaries in perfumery continue to blur. The fragrance enters a crowded fresh-floral market but distinguishes itself through its gardenia-rose heart and clean aquatic drydown, positioning itself as refined rather than sweet.
