The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In Romanian and Dacian myth, the buzdugan is an enchanted mace, a weapon imbued with supernatural power, passed through stories for centuries. It appears in Slavic and Eastern European folklore as an object of magic, wielded by princes and wizards alike. Arturetto Landi translated this concept into scent in 2020, building an Oriental Woody composition around cedar and leather. The structure is sharpened by saffron and black pepper, deepened by ambergris and frankincense smoke. The cedar brings a dry, pencil-shaving quality that grounds the leather, while the saffron adds a faint medicinal sweetness that keeps the spices from reading as purely culinary. Black pepper provides a clean, sharp lift in the opening moments.
The top accord opens with saffron bringing an immediate warmth and faint sweetness that stops the spice from becoming purely culinary, while black pepper and cinnamon add sharp lift. The heart shifts into cedar taking over with labdanum and leather creating a darkness that feels polished rather than harsh, the smell of old wood in a dim room, not raw bark. Labdanum adds a sticky, resinous depth that thickens the cedar, while the leather note evokes worn armchair leather rather than anything harsh or industrial.
The evolution
The opening announces itself immediately, warm spices take over, the saffron bringing a sweetness that tempers the cinnamon and black pepper. The mango and rhubarb add a brief tropical tang that quickly dissolves as the composition moves forward. The heart takes hold with cedar and leather dominating, labdanum adding a sticky, resinous depth. Jasmine appears as a faint floral ghost, keeping the heart from going fully dark. By the third hour, the drydown begins. Ambergris brings a mineral, animalic edge. Frankincense smoke curls underneath. White musk keeps the close. The sillage has dropped to intimate, you have to lean in to smell it. On fabric, the leather and smoke can linger into the next day.
Cultural impact
Buzduganul Fermecat joins a house known for mythological, story-driven compositions. The perfumer brought technical craft to match the concept, creating a fragrance that sits in the dark, smoky, leather-forward corner of niche fragrance. The result works alongside other story-driven niche compositions that draw from cultural traditions, offering something with genuine depth and narrative complexity.
