The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Turn 4XT arrived in November 2010 as Avon's racing-inspired men's cologne, fronted by NASCAR driver Carl Edwards. The concept borrows directly from oval-track racing culture, a world where split-second decisions and raw speed define the sport. Avon developed the fragrance with that energy in mind, positioning Edwards as the face of a scent built for men drawn to competition and the visceral thrill of the track. Edwards himself noted that the fragrance made him feel self-confident and strong, calling it the essence of racing. The bottle design carries the theme forward with a glass flacon etched in patterns that echo tire impressions left on asphalt.
What makes Turn 4XT structurally interesting is the unusual layering of Java vetiver against mahogany and a material Avon lists as Pepperwood. Java vetiver brings a wet, rooty, almost smoky earthiness that sets the composition apart from typical men's designer colognes. The note carries a heavier, more mineral quality than lighter vetiver varieties, grounding the fragrance with something that feels pulled from damp soil after rain. Mahogany contributes a rich depth without overt woodiness, lending the base a smoothness that keeps the earthiness from reading as raw.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are loud and green, ginger cutting through with a sharp, almost carbonated heat while basil and coriander add an herbal flicker underneath. Lavender arrives quickly to soften the edges, but the opening stays assertive; this is not a quiet first impression. The ginger reads more like freshly grated root than dried spice, with a tingle that perks up the nose. By the one-hour mark, the lavender has settled into the background and the wood notes begin to surface. Mahogany comes forward with that resinous warmth, and the Java vetiver starts pulling the composition downward toward earth. Black pepper adds intermittent spark without becoming sharp, registering more as a warmth than a burn. The two-to-four-hour stretch is where the fragrance finds its stride: a warm, slightly sweet woody-amber core that sits close to the skin without disappearing entirely.
Cultural impact
Turn 4XT sits in a specific corner of men's fragrance: the racing-inspired celebrity launch, anchored by NASCAR driver Carl Edwards. The campaign brought the scent directly to motorsports fans, men who followed Edwards on the track and wanted a cologne that carried some of that same intensity. Within Avon's catalogue, it stands as one of the more aggressive masculine releases, distinct from the gentler, more accessible profiles that the brand typically offers its male customers.
