The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Philippe Romano composed Flight of Fancy for Anna Sui in 2013, adding it to the Tin House collection, a line of fragrances housed in decorative tin boxes shaped like miniature fairy tale houses. Each bottle comes packaged in its own keepsake house, meant to be displayed rather than discarded. The concept turns fragrance into something you collect, arrange, and revisit. Flight of Fancy entered this whimsical lineup as a light counterpoint to heavier entries, a scent that matched the collection's playful spirit without competing with it.
The structure rewards patience. Rather than blasting through the citrus top, the lychee holds its sweetness while yuzu and java lemon temper it with a clean, slightly tart edge. What makes this composition work is the transition, rose doesn't arrive and overwhelm; it settles in alongside the remaining citrus, warming everything without smothering it. Freesia adds a powdery floral lift. Crystal amber is the quiet anchor that keeps the heart from floating away. The base, white cedarwood and musk, arrives soft and stays soft. Not a dramatic reveal. A slow gentle fade.
The evolution
Lychee opens the door and steps aside. Yuzu follows, cleaner and cooler than the lychee's fruit-sweet. The Java lemon keeps things honest, citrus that doesn't pretend to be anything other than bright. Ten minutes in, the rose enters. It doesn't storm the composition; it gentles it. Freesia adds a powdery lift that makes the whole thing feel lighter, like something you'd find in a sunlit room rather than on a dance floor. Crystal amber stays through the heart, warm without sweetness, a backbone that holds the florals together. The drydown is the quietest chapter. White cedarwood and musk arrive together, soft and intimate. The sillage is moderate. It stays close to the skin. What lingers is the amber and cedar, woodsy, quiet, the kind of smell that doesn't announce itself but leaves an impression.
Cultural impact
Flight of Fancy occupies a specific niche within Anna Sui's fragrance lineup, a light, approachable fruity-floral for everyday wear. The Tin House collection targets collectors and fans of the brand's whimsical aesthetic. Anna Sui fragrances are developed in collaboration with established perfume houses in France and the United States, with Philippe Romano bringing a restrained hand to this 2013 composition.
