The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Midnight Encore landed in 2022 as part of And Other Stories' growing fragrance portfolio. Positioned as a Floral Green unisex release, the fragrance carries a quiet, intentional character that distinguishes it from louder launches crowding the market. The composition reads cool and refreshing at first contact, a blend of coconut water, black pepper, and green fig leaf that feels closer to crushed greenery than to anything traditionally sweet. Beneath that green top sits a base of cashmere wood, ambroxan, and musk, materials known for their skin-close warmth and soft, almost mineral drydown. The contrast between the wet, almost drinkable opening and the textured wood beneath gives the scent its pull: it cools you down while pulling you closer.
What makes this composition worth attention is the tension between its cool, almost wet top notes and the warm, textured wood base waiting beneath. Coconut water and black pepper create an unexpected pairing, and the result is sharper and more refreshing than either material on its own. The green fig and jasmine leaves in the heart double down on that cool factor, keeping things herbal and leafy rather than sweet. Then the base reveals its hand. Ambroxan brings a mineral-amber warmth, lending a skin-like quality that feels lived-in rather than loud.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are the loudest. Black pepper pops with a quick, almost fizzy heat while coconut water floats above it, cooling and slightly sweet, like a drink poured over crushed ice. There's a faint green edge right away, teasing what's coming. The opening reads bright, almost sharp, the kind of scent that walks into a room before you do. Around the twenty-minute mark the pepper softens and the fig leaf arrives in earnest. Green, sappy, with a faint milky sweetness underneath, it pushes the coconut water further into the background. Jasmine leaf adds a clean, watery floral that never tips into perfume territory, just greenness with a faint glow. The whole heart has that sensation of foliage after rain, vegetal and alive, with a creamy undercurrent that keeps it from feeling austere. As the hours pass the woods begin to surface more clearly.
Cultural impact
Midnight Encore's pairing of black pepper and coconut water felt deliberately off-center from the start, a combination that reads more like a creative experiment than a crowd-pleasing crowd-pleaser. The composition's green fig leaf and jasmine heart gave it a vegetal, rain-soaked character that separated it from the louder designer launches dominating the market, and its skin-close ambroxan and cashmere wood base made it a fragrance people returned to rather than sprayed once and forgot.
