The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Oud Tabac came together in 2018 under Ilias Ermenidis. The composition takes the richness of agarwood and pairs it with tobacco, creating something that feels both deep and inviting. Tobacco brings a rounder, sweeter quality with natural resinous character that complements the oud without overwhelming it. Saffron and ginger were added to open the composition with brightness, bringing an initial spark that gives way to the richer materials. The result is a fragrance that balances depth with a sense of warmth and comfort, offering complexity while remaining approachable.
What makes Oud Tabac interesting is how it handles the oud-tobacco pairing. The tobacco is aromatic and warm, with a natural sweetness that makes the oud feel approachable rather than demanding. Heliotrope in the opening adds a powdery softness that keeps the saffron and ginger from reading as purely sharp, creating a balanced introduction that invites you in. By the time you reach the base, bourbon vanilla and cedar have smoothed everything into something warm and comforting, a gentle embrace that lingers on the skin and wraps you in softness.
The evolution
The opening arrives quickly, with ginger's clean heat hitting first, followed by saffron's warm spice. Coriander adds a faint herbal lift, and heliotrope brings a powdery sweetness that softens the edge before it can feel harsh. Then the hand-off: tobacco rises to meet the oud, and the composition shifts from bright to warm. The oud has been woven into the tobacco accord, creating a smoky quality that feels smooth and refined rather than harsh. Amberwood and frankincense add resinous depth, but the dominant impression is aromatic and sweet, not austere. By the second hour, vanilla takes over. Bourbon vanilla, creamy and warm, wraps around the tobacco like a second skin. Cedar adds a dry, woody structure underneath, and musk keeps everything close, intimate sillage that stays within arm's reach rather than announcing itself across the room.
Cultural impact
Oud Tabac occupies a specific space in the oud category, offering something for those who want the depth of oud but seek something that feels more nuanced and layered than many oud fragrances. The tobacco and vanilla make it approachable, softening the intensity while the oud backbone gives it enough complexity to reward attention. It's not simply a sweet scent or a dry one, but something that balances multiple dimensions. The kind of fragrance that reveals new facets over time, offering depth without being one-dimensional, balancing richness with a sense of warmth that invites repeated wearing.
