The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name holds the whole idea. Three wise figures, traveling far with precious things. Not the obvious gift, something rare, considered, worth the journey. Sharra Lamoureaux built Gifts of the Magi around that same principle: layers that unfold slowly, resins that take time to reveal themselves, accords that reward patience rather than demand it. The fragrance draws from a long list of materials, aged amber, Ethiopian frankincense, Kenyan opoponax, Assam oud, dokha tobacco, Criollo cacao, each one a different kind of precious. The seven-year aged amber is not a marketing claim. It's the structural reason this works at all.
What makes this composition unusual is the combination at its heart. Most amber-forward fragrances lean sweet. Gifts of the Magi adds dokha tobacco infused with Criollo cacao, a pairing that brings smoke, bitter edge, and a dark chocolate warmth that cuts through the vanilla rather than amplifying it. The Kenyan opoponax and Ethiopian frankincense don't compete with the amber. They deepen it, adding a balsamic resinous quality that feels ancient rather than modern. Then there's the fern, deerstongue fern specifically, which appears in the herb blend and gives the opening its slightly animalic, green edge. It's an unusual note in a mainstream context.
The evolution
The opening hits sharp. Bay leaf and pink pepper lead with an herbal brightness that feels almost green, like crushed leaves on a cold morning. The thyme sits just behind, adding warmth without sweetness. For the first twenty to thirty minutes, this reads as an aromatic rather than a resinous fragrance. Then the frankincense arrives. Not dramatically, it slides in quietly, taking space from the herbs rather than overwhelming them. The Ethiopian frankincense has a slightly citrusy, clean smoke that lifts the composition rather than weighing it down. The opoponax follows, bringing a sweet, balsamic quality that starts to shift the fragrance toward its amber core. By the second hour, the oud is present. Assam oud is known for its dark, slightly barnyard edge, not aggressive here, but definitely there, adding depth to what could otherwise read as purely warm and sweet. The dokha tobacco with Criollo cacao beans creates the drydown's defining character. Smoke, cocoa, and a lingering tobacco warmth that stays close to the skin for six to eight hours on most surfaces.
Cultural impact
Gifts of the Magi lives in the Special Reserve Collection, Alkemia's space for compositions too unusual or too demanding for the standard line. It was discontinued, which has only deepened its reputation among indie fragrance collectors who seek it out. The combination of aged amber, Ethiopian frankincense, and dokha-tobacco-infused cacao represents the kind of bold, layered composition the house is known for: something that asks something of the wearer and rewards them for it.
