The beginning
Fumé Oud à la Vanille arrived in 2015 from Alkemia Perfumes, an indie house whose catalogue had been pushing deeper into incense and resin territory by the middle of the decade. This one came straight out of that exploration. The idea was simple: take oud, the material that usually dominates a room, and tuck it inside something softer. Bourbon vanilla aged with oud wood, woodsmoked amber, crushed tonka beans, and a curl of woodsmoke. The composition leans into warmth rather than sharpness, letting the smoke act as a through-line that holds the sweeter elements in place. The name does the same work, French phrasing that arranges the key materials like a menu of what's coming.
The interesting move here is restraint. Oud on its own tends to be polarizing, and pairing it with bourbon vanilla and tonka smooths that edge without erasing the oud's resinous depth. The late drydown shifts toward amber and skin-warmth, the vanilla gone quiet, the oud almost mossy. As the hours pass, the woodsmoked amber becomes more prominent, lending a dry, slightly ashen quality that grounds the remaining sweetness.
