Why it exists.
The beginning
County Fair arrived in 2012 as part of The Wanderer's Journal Collection. Sharra Lamoureaux created it around a specific memory: the sensory chaos of an American county fair. Not the idea of a fair, the actual smell. Kettle corn drifting through humid evening air. Cotton candy melting on the tongue. Candied apples glowing under strung lights. The brief, sticky sweetness of saltwater taffy pulled between teeth. She translated that memory directly into a composition, using gourmand materials to recreate the carnival midway experience without metaphor or abstraction. The result is a fragrance that smells like a place, not a concept.
What makes County Fair interesting is the contrast between its light, ephemeral opening and the heavier notes underneath. Cotton candy reads as pure sugar and air, the olfactory equivalent of something dissolving on your tongue. But the kettle corn and fried dough bring oil, warmth, and a slight char that grounds that sweetness. Saltwater taffy adds salt and pull. The composition doesn't just smell sweet. It smells like sweet AND warm AND sticky, the full sensory stack of actually eating these foods at a fair. That's harder to achieve than it sounds. Most gourmand fragrances pick one note and camp there. County Fair moves through the carnival food court.
The evolution
County Fair opens with cotton candy, sweet, airy, and immediate. The sugar hits skin and spreads fast. Within minutes, kettle corn arrives: warm, slightly oily, buttery-salt. It makes the sweetness feel less like a cloud and more like an actual food. Fried dough follows, that golden, heavy warmth of the vendor tent. The drydown settles into candied apple and toffee. The sugar concentrates. It lingers close to skin for 4-6 hours, intimate but persistent, a sticky-sweet moment that never quite ends.
Cultural impact
County Fair has earned a dedicated following among gourmand fragrance collectors who want that specific fairground atmosphere. Solstice Scents Foxcroft Fairgrounds and Sixteen92 Shadow Show share similar DNA, but County Fair sets itself apart with its cotton candy emphasis and buttery toffee drydown. Since its 2012 launch, it has remained a niche favorite, sweet, nostalgic, and unapologetically itself.
