The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Alexandria Fragrances built Malibu Beach around a single idea: a scent that captures the atmosphere of a beach, not just a caricature of sand and surf. Hany Hafez started with mint and citrus to evoke that first breath of ocean air, then reached for galbanum to add a green sharpness that cuts through the sweetness. Orange blossom brought the floral warmth of blossoms in full sun, adding a layer of sweetness that balances the sharper top notes. But the real work happened in the base, where ivy, moss, and vetiver ground the composition in something earthier and more complex than a simple beach reference. Ivy brings a damp, slightly bitter green quality. Moss adds mineral depth. Vetiver anchors the composition with its rooty, smoky character that evokes wet stone.
The combination of ivy, moss, and vetiver creates a distinctive foundation for this fragrance. These are materials that usually live in autumn compositions, but in Malibu Beach they serve a different purpose. Ivy brings a damp, slightly bitter green. Moss adds mineral depth. Vetiver is the anchor, with its rooty, smoky character that smells like wet stone, not a swimming pool. These base notes support the mint and citrus from the opening, giving them substance rather than letting them drift into something that smells like air freshener.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and cooling, with mint and citrus leading the way. Galbanum adds a sharp green kick that prevents the top notes from smelling like toothpaste. Then the citrus fades and the green deepens. Galbanum takes over, becoming more herbal, almost medicinal for a moment before the handoff to the heart. The middle phase is where Malibu Beach earns its name. Ivy and moss arrive together, bringing a damp, dewy quality that evokes coastal vegetation. Vetiver grounds everything with its earthy, slightly smoky character. This phase carries the fragrance for several hours, and it is where most people experience the core of the scent. The base arrives quietly. Patchouli brings an earthy, slightly sweet depth. Myrrh adds a warm, balsamic quality that softens the green edges. Woody notes provide the final structure, clean and dry. The drydown is intimate, woody, and clean.
Cultural impact
Malibu Beach draws its inspiration from Amouage Beach Hut Man, a fragrance notable for its unusual green character. The Alexandria interpretation has drawn comparison to the original, with some preferring the softer approach to the difficult ivy note that defines Beach Hut Man. Community reviews frequently mention the comparison between the two scents. The longevity and sillage scores make it a reliable warm-weather option for those seeking a beach-inspired fragrance with green character.
