Why it exists.
The beginning
Lazuli arrived in 2020 as part of Al Wataniah's Eternal collection, a line built around the idea that certain scents deserve to stay. Named for the deep blue stone prized across Arabian culture, the fragrance translates that sense of enduring beauty into something wearable. The brief was clear: a bright, clean composition that could anchor itself in heat without wilting, drawing from the citrus and floral vocabulary that defines Mediterranean perfumery while remaining rooted in Arabian tradition.
What makes Lazuli interesting is its restraint. Four citrus top notes, lemon, bergamot, bitter orange, mandarin orange, should crowd the opening. They don't. Instead, they arrive in sequence, each one arriving as the last settles, creating a cascading effect that lasts longer than typical citrus compositions. The heart pairs neroli with African orange flower, a combination that leans soapy in the best way, not industrial, but the clean kind. The base is single-note amber, warm and uncomplicated, letting the florals do the talking.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and immediate, four citrus notes hitting simultaneously, lemon and bergamot first, then bitter orange and mandarin arriving as the others settle. Twenty minutes in, the neroli takes over, pushing the citrus to the background. The white florals dominate for the next two to three hours, soapy and clean, the African orange flower adding a slightly deeper sweetness that prevents it from reading too delicate. The amber base arrives quietly around hour three, staying close to the skin, warm and unobtrusive. By hour four, it's a skin scent, present only when someone is close enough to notice.
Cultural impact
Lazuli has earned a reputation as an accessible alternative to pricier Mediterranean citrus fragrances, with wearers frequently comparing it to Tom Ford Neroli Portofino at a fraction of the cost. The Eternal collection positions it as a lasting presence rather than a seasonal one.
