The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Christian Carbonnel designed Urbanist Homme as an aromatic masculine scent that bridges fresh citrus and herbal depth. Working with Al Haramain's heritage of oriental perfumery, he built this fragrance around the tension between clean Mediterranean brightness, petitgrain, orange, lemon, and the warmer register of lavender, rosemary, and jasmine. The composition balances the sharp clarity of citrus with deeper herbal tones, creating a fragrance that feels both invigorating and grounded. Petitgrain's green, slightly bitter edge keeps the sweetness honest, while the floral heart adds unexpected complexity to what might otherwise be a straightforward aromatic profile.
What makes this composition interesting is the jasmine placement. Here it threads through the lavender and rosemary heart, adding a white floral dimension that shifts the aromatic character from straightforward to something with more complexity. The jasmine doesn't compete with the herbal notes; instead, it weaves between them, softening the edges and adding a quiet, refined sweetness that evolves as the fragrance develops. Combined with tonka bean's subtle sweetness and a musk-sandalwood foundation, the result is an aromatic masculine with genuine depth.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes belong to the citrus. Petitgrain, orange, and lemon arrive sharp and immediate, petitgrain's green, slightly bitter edge keeping the sweetness honest. The transition begins around the 10-minute mark as lavender emerges, softening the citrus into something more herbal and familiar. By 30 minutes in, the heart is fully established: lavender and rosemary dominant, jasmine threading through as a quiet floral counterpoint. The interplay between these herbal and floral elements creates a satisfying tension, neither side overwhelming the other. The drydown starts around the 2-hour mark and shifts the fragrance into its warmest register. Musk, sandalwood, amber, and tonka bean form a skin-close warmth that persists for hours. This becomes a fragrance you wear rather than one that wears you.
Cultural impact
Urbanist Homme occupies an interesting position within Al Haramain's catalog. The jasmine in the heart adds a white floral dimension that elevates the composition beyond straightforward aromatic masculine scents, bringing a subtle complexity that rewards close attention. This floral threading creates a more nuanced character than typical aromatic fragrances, offering something that feels familiar yet distinctly different. The warmth of the drydown ensures the fragrance has presence and longevity on the skin.
