The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Al Aneeq, established in the UAE in 2014, built its identity sourcing aged agarwood from Gulf forests and reimagining traditional Arabian oud through a contemporary lens. In 2019, the house set a specific creative brief for Oud Wisal: a fragrance that fused the luminous quality of a rose garden with the depth of spiced woods, creating an accessible yet authentic expression of Arabian perfumery. The perfumer chose to lead with citrus and davana rather than raw oud, signaling that this would be a modern interpretation rather than a traditional one.
The note selection reflects Al Aneeq's philosophy of layering heritage ingredients with contemporary sensibilities. Bergamot and orange are Western citrus staples, while davana is a herb native to India that adds an aromatic complexity rarely found in Gulf perfumery. The heart combines Middle Eastern woody traditions (cedar, sandalwood) with global florals (jasmine from India, saffron from Iran) and the spice trade's legacy (clove from Indonesia). This geographic breadth ensures Oud Wisal feels both familiar to oud lovers and inviting to those new to Arabian perfumery.
The evolution
Oud Wisal's evolution begins with the crispness of bergamot and orange meeting geranium's green floral note, creating an opening that feels like sunlight through a garden canopy. Davana bridges the transition, its aromatic sweetness hinting at the complexity to come. The heart introduces a denser, more sensual chapter: jasmine and orchid bring creamy floral depth, while clove and saffron inject spicy warmth and a distinctive leathery-mineral character. Cedarwood and sandalwood provide structure, ensuring the florals remain elegant rather than powdery. The final chapter is one of quiet warmth: amber and cashmere wood soften the woods into something skin-close and comforting, while musky notes ensure the fragrance lingers without projecting aggressively.
Cultural impact
Since its 2019 debut, Oud Wisal has quietly earned a place among enthusiasts who seek a rose‑centric oud that doesn’t dominate with heaviness. It’s frequently mentioned alongside Al Aneeq’s Oud Wafaa as a modern, approachable take on desert‑inspired fragrance, appealing to both traditional oud lovers and those new to the genre.
