The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Pierre Flores and TechnicoFlor designed Incense Wood in 2019 as part of Ajmal's W Series. The fragrance opens with sharp, metallic spice that immediately commands attention. Pink pepper brings its characteristic buzzy heat while bergamot provides a fleeting citrus brightness in the opening moments. As the composition develops, the structure shifts and the incense character becomes more defined, settling into warm resinous territory. The contrast between that initial metallic sharpness and the eventual warm vanilla drydown creates a dynamic wearing experience, two different aromatic dimensions that coexist on skin.
What makes Incense Wood interesting isn't any single material, it's the conversation between cashmere wood and frankincense. Cashmeran, the synthetic molecule that gives cashmere wood its name, is soft by nature. It wants to be skin. But frankincense is smoke. Resin. Something ancient and slightly austere. The composition gives both room to speak, letting the tension hold rather than resolving it too quickly. The vanilla and patchouli in the base do the diplomatic work, they don't erase the tension, they just make it comfortable enough to live in.
The evolution
The opening hits first. Saffron's metallic spice arrives sharp and intentional, pink pepper lends its characteristic buzzy heat while bergamot cuts through with a brief citrus brightness. Thirty seconds in, you know exactly what you've put on. The structure shifts within the first thirty minutes as the heart takes over. Frankincense emerges as the true spine of the composition, that slow-burning resin smoke threading between the incense note and the cashmere wood's softer warmth. The drydown is where the formula earns its keep. Patchouli grounds everything with its earthy, slightly bitter complexity, keeping the vanilla honest, refusing to let this become overly sweet. Musk and vanilla arrive together in the final act, wrapping the earlier intensity in something warm and close.
Cultural impact
Incense Wood occupies comfortable territory within the oriental woody category, strong enough to make a statement, warm enough to invite wearing. The composition suggests a fragrance that performs through extended wear, appealing to those who want presence without constant maintenance. Its construction balances projection with intimacy, allowing the wearer to carry the scent without it overwhelming a space.
