The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Velvet collection has always been about concentration, perfume oils in bottles that feel like something worth keeping. In 2018, Dolce&Gabbana turned to the most ancient material in perfumery: incense. Not the church-bound kind that overwhelms. The kind that intrigues. Perfumer Julie Massé worked with African frankincense as the structural spine, mineral and cool, and built outward with black pepper and elemi for an opening that feels crisp and inviting. The result is a fragrance that uses one of perfumery's oldest materials but reimagines it for a modern context, avoiding heavy or old-fashioned associations entirely.
What makes this composition unusual is the opening-to-close trajectory. The African frankincense in the top accord carries a mineral quality that reads as restrained before the labdanum and benzoin arrive. The elemi adds a citrus-resinous lift that keeps the opening from becoming austere, while the black pepper provides clean heat that integrates smoothly as the fragrance develops. The overall impression is one of careful craftsmanship, where each phase of the fragrance reveals itself without rushing, creating a layered experience that rewards patience.
The evolution
The opening is a study in restraint. African frankincense arrives mineral and cool, almost austere. Black pepper sharpens the edges. Elemi lifts with a citrus-resinous quality that keeps the opening from becoming heavy. The heart hands off to incense and labdanum, warmer and richer, the balsamic quality that makes resinous fragrances feel intimate rather than loud. As the fragrance evolves, it shifts from something almost cool to something that starts to hug the skin. The drydown is where it earns its name. Benzoin brings vanilla-cinnamon sweetness. American cedar grounds it. Patchouli extends everything into a smooth, close trail that lingers through the evening. The progression feels deliberate, each stage building on what came before to create something cohesive and enduring.
Cultural impact
Velvet Incenso occupies a distinctive position in the incense fragrance landscape, with a mineral and resinous character that sets it apart. The Velvet collection itself represents the house's concentration on perfume oils, presented as something distinct from their standard fragrance offerings. Wearers tend to describe it as a fragrance for someone who appreciates incense in a contemporary context, something that feels refined and purposeful rather than conventional or ceremonial.
