The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name says it all. Magnetic Magma was built around a single pull, the gravitational kind, the one that draws heat up from somewhere deep and makes it impossible to ignore. Perfumer Julien Rasquinet designed this for Agarthi as a fragrance that captures the moment before the surface breaks. The combination of cool and warm elements creates a tension that holds the scent together, a dynamic push and pull that makes the wearer lean in closer. Magma is what's underneath, what's always underneath, and Magnetic Magma asks what happens when it surfaces.
The combination is what makes it interesting. Rasquinet, known for mineral-woody compositions with serious projection, built Magnetic Magma around a paradox, cool, fruity brightness at the opening, with a base that reads as warm, smoky, and dense. Here, the marine and violet leaf cool the opening, the ginger adds clean heat, and the oud-patchouli foundation arrives like something that's been waiting. The mineral-woody base brings depth and grounding, while the fruity nuances weave through and create an unexpected lightness that balances the composition without sacrificing complexity.
The evolution
The opening arrives bright and slightly tart, clementine and raspberry over a green violet leaf note that cools everything down. There's a sparkle to it. The ginger appears within minutes, clean and spice-adjacent, while the marine accord keeps the top phase from going sweet. Cedarwood builds underneath, a woody scaffold that prepares the landing. Then the base takes over. The oud and patchouli don't fade in, they rise, slow and smoky, until the fruity brightness becomes a memory and what's left is dense, warm, resinous. The benzoin lingers longest, a sweet warmth that stays close to the skin. On fabric, the oud-patchouli stays for hours. The sillage shifts as the hours pass, starting strong and settling into something more intimate as the day wears on.
Cultural impact
Magnetic Magma sits in a specific corner of niche perfumery: mineral-woody with a solid oud-patchouli base and above-average projection. The mineral-woody foundation and strong sillage are present here. The mineral-woody backbone combined with substantial projection distinguishes this fragrance. The mineral-woody foundation anchors the fragrance, while unexpected marine and fruit notes create an intriguing complexity that sets it apart from more traditional oud compositions.
