    The Story of Seagrass

Seagrass brings the clean, mineral essence of shallow coastal waters to perfumery. Its scent profile merges green freshness with subtle aquatic depth, evoking sun-warmed tidal flats and the quiet vitality of underwater meadows. Perfumers value seagrass for its ability to ground marine compositions with organic, earthy warmth.

    Heritage

Seagrass has anchored coastal economies and ecosystems for millennia. Ancient Mediterranean communities used dried seagrass Posidonia oceanica as packing material, insulation, and even as a component in early cosmetics. The plant's extensive meadows, sometimes called the lungs of the Mediterranean, have been recognized since antiquity for their vitality and renewal. In perfumery, seagrass notes emerged as marine accords evolved beyond simple saltwater abstractions toward more nuanced, botanically accurate representations of coastal environments. Modern extraction techniques developed in the late 20th century enabled perfumers to authentically capture seagrass's complex green-mineral profile, expanding the vocabulary of marine perfumery.

    Production

    How Seagrass Is Made

Seagrass for perfumery undergoes supercritical CO2 extraction, a method that preserves temperature-sensitive aromatic compounds without residual solvents. Freshly harvested seagrass, primarily Zostera marina species, is freeze-dried and then processed at pressures above 7.4 MPa and temperatures around 35-50 degrees Celsius. This gentle technique captures the full spectrum of seagrass's green, marine, and slightly hay-like aromatic molecules including various aldehydes and fatty acid derivatives. The resulting extract appears as a pale amber liquid with moderate intensity, lending marine-green depth to aquatic and fresh fragrance constructions.
