The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Hawas takes its name from the hawassa, the deep, dark pools found scattered across the Arabian Peninsula where date palms crowd the water's edge. It is a striking reference for a fragrance built around fruity warmth and aquatic-adjacent freshness. The naming creates a deliberate tension between image and scent. Rasasi, founded in Dubai in 1979, has long operated at the intersection of Arabian perfumery traditions and modern international taste. The house is known for accessible luxury without compromise on composition, producing fragrances in-house from concept through distribution. Hawas for Him was designed to capture a specific tension: the cool, deep calm suggested by still dark water against the warm brightness of fruit and spice caught in afternoon light.
The note structure is designed to balance two impulses: immediate gratification through a bright, fruity opening, and lasting appeal through a warm, woody base. The citrus-fruit-spice top notes grab attention first, which is intentional. The melon, orange blossom, and plum heart then soften and deepen the initial brightness, creating a middle ground that feels inviting rather than overwhelming. The cedarwood, sandalwood, patchouli, and musk base ensures the fragrance stays interesting hours after application, rewarding those who get close. This layered architecture means Hawas for Him functions equally well as a casual daytime scent and an evening option when the warmth of the drydown comes into its own.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately with apple, bergamot, and pear, a bright crisp trio that feels energising and immediately present. Lemon and pineapple amplify the citrus-tropical brightness while cinnamon quietly introduces warmth beneath the fruit. This is a sunny, confident opening that does not ask permission. As the top notes begin to recede, the heart reveals itself: melon and plum create a sweet, sun-warmed fruit character that is surprisingly rich without tipping into gourmand territory. Orange blossom lends a clean floral quality that lifts the sweetness, and cardamom brings just enough spice to hint at depth without overtaking the composition. In the drydown, musk and amberwood smooth the transition into a warm, lingering base. Cedarwood and sandalwood build a woody structure that grounds the fragrance firmly, while patchouli adds earthy complexity and ambergris provides a subtle marine-salt undertone that echoes the aquatic naming without feeling like a literal water note.
Cultural impact
Hawas became a phenomenon through social media, particularly TikTok, where it built a devoted following among younger wearers who discovered it as an affordable alternative to pricier competitors. The conversation centers on one thing: performance that punches well above its price point. Strong sillage, lasting warmth, and that briny ambergris note that keeps it from smelling like a dozen other fresh fragrances. It's become a reference point in online fragrance communities, the benchmark for value in the aquatic-fruity category.
