The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2019, Zara brought in Jérôme Epinette to create something unapologetic. The goal was bold citrus from the first spray, an unapologetic burst of brightness that doesn't soften its edges or ask permission. Greenery hits first and asks nothing of you. It's a fragrance that understands the difference between confident and confrontational, and lands on the right side of that line. The composition stands apart by being direct without being aggressive, by being bright without being thin.
Lemon zest leads the composition, bright and assertive from the opening. Blackcurrant enters as a counterweight, tart and almost wine-like, darker than the name suggests. The black amber base holds the fragrance close, keeping the drydown intimate rather than projecting outward. Cedar does the quiet work underneath, adding texture that keeps the whole composition from reading as a single note. The interplay between these elements creates something that feels both bold and grounded.
The evolution
The opening is all lemon, a bright citrus explosion that announces itself without apology. The tartness is immediate and unfiltered. As the fragrance develops, blackcurrant threads through, cutting the sharp edges with something rounder and more complex. The citrus doesn't disappear entirely, it evolves, becoming part of the fruit rather than dominating it. The drydown brings black amber warming against skin, with cedarwood asserting itself quietly beneath. On fabric, the cedar lingers long after the initial brightness fades, a faint woody warmth that catches you by surprise. What remains is the cedar, grounded and persistent, the note that defines how Greenery ends.
Cultural impact
Greenery appeals to wearers who want bold citrus without the traditional heritage pricing. Positioned within Zara's broader fashion aesthetic, it draws buyers who appreciate considered design without exclusivity as a status marker. This approach has given it a devoted following among those who seek quality and intentionality at accessible price points.
