The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Annick Ménardo created Comme une Evidence Le Parfum in 2008. She structured it around the classic chypre form, opening with a bright violet leaf note that feels crisp and slightly metallic, like the first snap of a fresh stem in a morning garden. The green opening sets a cool tone that steadies the fragrance as it moves into a rose‑jasmine heart, where the rose lends a velvety, slightly tart floralcy while the jasmine adds a creamy, indolic depth that rounds the blend. The heart remains lifted, never overly sweet, because the violet leaf continues to anchor the composition. As the top notes recede, the base unfolds with oakmoss and patchouli, delivering a damp, earthy mossiness and a warm, resinous woodiness that give the scent its lasting presence.
In the opening, the violet leaf note is not merely decorative; it provides a cool, slightly metallic freshness that shapes the trajectory of the whole scent. This green quality prevents the rose and jasmine from becoming overly sweet or soapy, keeping the heart balanced and lively. As the fragrance develops, the rose and jasmine intermingle, creating a lush floral core that retains a natural sharpness thanks to the underlying violet leaf. The praline in the base adds a subtle, warm sweetness that softens the oakmoss and patchouli without making the drydown feel heavy or cloying.
The evolution
The opening is cool and immediate, with violet leaf delivering a metallic edge that recalls cutting fresh stems in a greenhouse before the dew has dried. Nutmeg arrives quickly, providing a warm counterpoint to the green without overpowering it. As the initial phase settles, the florals take over, and the heart becomes unmistakably rose. Jasmine steps in alongside it, and together they create a lush floral presence that never tips into sweetness. Lily of the valley adds a sharp, green nuance that keeps both florals honest and grounded. The transition from opening to heart happens smoothly; the spiced warmth recedes into the background rather than disappearing, becoming a subtle atmosphere that supports the florals. The drydown reveals oakmoss with its characteristic damp‑earth quality, mossy and slightly bitter, while patchouli deepens the base into something substantial and enduring.
Cultural impact
Comme une Evidence Le Parfum holds a distinctive place among accessible floral chypres, offering a middle path between the bold, projection‑heavy chypres of earlier decades and the lighter, airy florals that have become common. Its design respects the classical structure of the chypre family while maintaining a wearability suited to everyday use across different seasons and occasions. The fragrance is notable for its unapologetic drydown, where oakmoss and patchouli remain present and honest, never softened by modern trends.
