The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Anemoia is a 2023 composition by Yusuf Bhai, the Dubai-based perfumer whose name has become shorthand for direct, intuition-led fragrance making. The name itself means nostalgia for a time you've never lived, a longing for something vaguely familiar that you've never actually touched. That idea runs quietly underneath the whole composition: fresh, almost sharp at first, then pulling you toward something older and more rooted than the opening suggests. Bhai works as a Dubai-based independent, and Anemoia reads as a statement of intent rather than an exercise in nostalgia. The ingredients tell you where the composition lives: Virginia cedar and Haitian vetiver are the structural anchors, real materials with weight and presence, chosen for what they do rather than what they signal.
What makes Anemoia worth a second look is the deliberate friction between its halves. The top is bright, almost bracing: grapefruit's tartness sharpened by rhubarb, grounded by lavender and the clean heat of nutmeg. The heart pulls it somewhere else entirely: iris and Haitian vetiver with Virginia cedar, materials that read more dignified than the opening suggests. The base then chooses oakmoss and styrax, layered over a second vetiver that deepens the earthy pull. The transition from opening to heart is where the composition earns its complexity.
The evolution
Anemoia opens the way a cold morning feels: sharp grapefruit, the tart green snap of rhubarb, lavender's familiar coolness underneath, and nutmeg adding a clean warmth that keeps the whole thing from reading as just a cologne splash. The opening is bright and almost breezy, with the citrus and rhubarb doing most of the talking while lavender and nutmeg provide the frame. Then the iris arrives. It doesn't announce itself so much as settle over everything, softening the grapefruit's edge and pulling the lavender into something more powdery, more grown. The Haitian vetiver comes in alongside, and Virginia cedar adds that dry, papery wood note that gives the heart room. As the composition wears, the aromatic top fades and an earthy, mossy base takes over.
Cultural impact
Anemoia sits at the intersection of two worlds that don't always overlap: the classic aromatic-fougère structure rooted in perfumery tradition, and a newer sensibility in independent fragrance. The note skeleton reads familiar to anyone who knows the genre, but the grapefruit-rhubarb opening and the styrax-heavy base give it a particular warmth that distinguishes it within the architecture. The fougère framework is one of the oldest in Western perfumery, built around lavender, oakmoss, and coumarin-rich bases, and Anemoia honors that lineage while reshaping its edges.
