The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ummo arrived in 2018 as a meditation on tobacco, one of the most symbolic plants of the American continent. Rodrigo Flores-Roux built the composition around the dried leaf's smoke, that moment when smoke rises and carries something sacred. The smoke of tobacco has been used for spiritual ceremonies, healing, purification. This is that smoke, captured and released. The fragrance opens with a sharp, green brightness that recalls the moment a leaf catches flame, followed by the mellowing of that initial bite as smoke settles into something softer and more contemplative.
What makes Ummo distinctive is the pairing of tobacco blossom with honey and liquidambar. Tobacco blossom isn't the cured leaf, it's green, floral, almost jasmine-like in its fresh character. Honey brings sweetness that could tip into gourmand territory, but the styrax and juniper keep it grounded in smoke and resin. The result is tobacco that smells alive, not pot-pourri.
The evolution
The opening hits like smoke from dried leaves, sharp, green, with juniper's clean bite cutting through. Within minutes, tobacco blossom arrives, bringing a floral sweetness that tempers the smoke. Honey threads through next, thick and golden, deepening the warmth. Liquidambar settles in, adding that resinous amber depth. The drydown arrives quietly, tonka and cedar, warm and close, with the styrax lending a final whisper of smoke. The fragrance stays close to the skin through the evening, its smoke gently curling and revealing itself in layers as the hours pass. What begins as a sharp green bite gradually softens into something honeyed and resinous, each transition smooth and deliberate.
Cultural impact
Ummo has found its audience among those who appreciate tobacco as a ritualistic element rather than a pot-pourri effect. The fragrance attracts wearers who want authenticity in their tobacco representation, smoke that reads as alive, not stewed. It appeals to those seeking something genuine in a landscape of synthetic options. The scent carries a weight and sincerity that resonates with people who value real botanical character over convenience.
