The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
King Masarat opens with the bright citrus of blood orange and lavender, a lively and inviting start that eases the wearer into the composition. From there, the heart unfolds with Egyptian jasmine and Turkish rose, bringing a floral richness that feels both elegant and grounded. The base anchors the fragrance with three varieties of oud and bourbon vanilla, creating depth and warmth that lingers. The structure moves deliberately from accessible to something deeper, each stage building naturally on the last.
The structure is deliberate. Chris Maurice opens with citrus and lavender rather than oud, choosing a different entry point into the composition. The architecture places citrus and lavender up front, florals in the middle, and oud and vanilla below, creating a clear trajectory from start to finish. The three oud varieties Thai, Cambodian, and Bornean bring their own distinct characters to the blend, each contributing to a base that feels cohesive and multi-dimensional.
The evolution
The opening hits quickly, blood orange arrives bright and citrusy, with lavender lending an herbaceous counterpoint that keeps things from going sweet too fast. This phase lasts before the florals begin to emerge. The heart is where things get interesting. Jasmine and Turkish rose arrive with a creaminess that plays against the licorice, some wearers perceive the licorice as powdery, others as distinctly sweet and anise-adjacent. The oud does not announce itself loudly at this stage. It hums underneath, a dark warmth building gradually. The drydown is where King Masarat earns its reputation. Bourbon vanilla finally arrives and the oud rises to meet it. This is the phase that lasts, the oud-vanilla combination developing into something that stays close to the skin but lingers for hours. On fabric, the sillage remains noticeable throughout the day.
Cultural impact
King Masarat is part of Xerjoff's broader Oud collection. The fragrance takes a distinctive approach to oud, one that prioritizes layering, balance, and wearability. This refined handling of the material sets it apart from more aggressive interpretations, offering a sophisticated alternative for those who appreciate the complexity of oud without wanting something harsh or overwhelming.
