Why it exists.
The beginning
The Mexican Violetear is a species of hummingbird, and it's the bird that gives this 2023 composition its name. Whitney Swales created Violetear for Wit & West's Reserve Collection, the line of limited releases from the natural perfumery she leads. The house is built around natural perfumery, labeled 100% Natural, and every formula leans on plant-derived materials: essential oils, absolutes, and tinctures sourced for their aromatic complexity. Each Reserve piece translates a specific place or living thing into something wearable, and Violetear captures the restless character of a hummingbird in motion. The composition reads as an exercise in restraint and angle, a fragrance that shifts as you move through it, never sitting still for very long.
What separates Violetear from so many contemporary florals is the deliberate absence of sweetness. The lavender here gets rendered almost austere through iris, a cool and dry pairing that pulls the composition toward powder and stone. Mimosa adds a lift that catches light without warmth, and the rose absolute keeps things grounded rather than romantic, more stem than petal. The all-natural violet accord, built in-house, functions as the connective tissue between the florals, a thread of green that runs from the opening through the heart.
The evolution
The first 30 minutes belong to iris and bergamot, cool and almost mineral, like cold water on stone. Then the lavender swells in, bringing a herbal density that one reviewer compared to Jean Patou's vintage chypres, minus the baroque sweetness. Mimosa and rose absolute arrive next, powdery and slightly soapy, the floral phase that makes Violetear feel most like a classical perfume. What comes after is the surprise. The oakmoss doesn't so much support the composition as strip it bare. The drydown is moss and frankincense with very little covering them, raw and a little lonely on skin. The tonka bean adds just enough warmth to keep the finish from disappearing entirely. As the hours pass, the oakmoss deepens into something almost bitter, the frankincense cools into a smoky shadow, and the tonka slowly fades beneath them.

Wit & West's Reserve Collection, where Violetear lives, occupies a specific corner of the natural perfumery landscape, a space where material choices and aesthetic choices tend to reinforce each other. Violetear's bare, oakmoss-heavy drydown reflects that philosophy directly, showing what happens when a composition refuses to round itself off with softer materials. The fragrance leans into a classical sensibility, evoking the green, austere chypres of earlier decades while remaining entirely modern in its restraint.
