The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Viktor & Rolf built Bonbon into a signature. The 2014 original wrapped caramel in white florals, creating a scent that became instantly recognizable. By 2017, the house created a Bonbon for the warmer months. Spring Summer arrived as a retouched version, with adjustments made for different conditions. The name stayed, because Bonbon does exactly what the brand intended, evokes sweetness through pure sound. The power of suggestion plays a role in how the fragrance is perceived. This seasonal take proves the point without losing what made the original worth reimagining. The house understands that a name can carry meaning before the scent itself even arrives, and Bonbon demonstrates this principle beautifully.
Creating a seasonal variation of a successful fragrance is a natural step for any house. Viktor & Rolf wanted a warmer-weather Bonbon. Light as silk, they called it. The citrus brightens everything. Grapefruit, tangerine, blackcurrant, all tart fruits that lift the composition. Orange blossom bridges the gap between sharp and sweet, adding a floral element that connects the citrus top notes to the heart. The result is a Bonbon that breathes differently in warm weather, maintaining the core identity while feeling more appropriate for the season.
The evolution
The citrus-fruity opening hits fast and tart. Blackcurrant, grapefruit, orange blossom, tangerine, a burst of brightness that feels like biting into something still warm from the sun. The sweetness has not arrived yet. For a significant portion of the wear, this is all about the tart edge, the citrus sparkle that promises something sweet is coming. Then the jasmine sambac and peach arrive, softening everything. Powdered sugar adds a confectionery note that feels appropriately light. The white florals, jasmine sambac especially, have presence, but here they share space with the peach rather than overwhelming it. As the drydown settles, the caramel arrives. Cedar and guaiac wood provide a woody warmth, musk keeps everything close to the skin. The caramel is present but not overwhelming, light as silk, as the brand intended. This is the Bonbon arc: bright opening, sweet heart, warm finish.
Cultural impact
Bonbon Spring Summer found its place as a lighter alternative to heavier sweet fragrances during warmer months. The launch arrived during a period when fruity-gourmand compositions were gaining popularity. Community feedback indicates varied longevity and sillage experiences, with some wearers reporting all-day wear capability while others find it more intimate. This variation reflects how different skin chemistries and environments can affect performance, making it a versatile choice for those who appreciate its character.
