The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2016, Alberto Morillas created Dylan Blue for Versace under license from EuroItalia, part of an expanding pour homme collection that began with the original in 2008. Morillas worked with an aromatic fougere structure, fresh and citrusy up top, mineral and woody in the heart, warm and resinous in the base. The fragrance opens with bright citrus that feels crisp and energizing, transitioning into a heart where mineral and woody notes interweave to create depth and complexity. The base brings warmth through resinous notes that linger on the skin, creating a complete olfactory experience that moves from initial freshness to lasting depth.
What makes Dylan Blue work is the Ambroxan. This synthetic material, derived from ambergris, replicates the mineral, slightly saline depth of the sea in a way natural ingredients struggle to achieve consistently. It gives the heart a seaweed-like quality without being literal or oceanic-park. Combined with Calabrian bergamot's bright, almost bitter citrus and fig leaf's green, slightly milky freshness, the composition avoids the generic aquatic trap. The drydown blends incense, saffron, and tonka bean, creating warmth that extends the fragrance's appeal beyond summer months.
The evolution
The opening is all citrus and air: bergamot and grapefruit hitting bright, with a synthetic aquatic accord that reads more clean water than ocean. Fig leaf adds a slight green edge, keeping it from smelling like cleaning product. The initial phase continues as the citrus and aquatic notes blend, creating a refreshing impression. Once the opening settles, the Ambroxan becomes prominent. The mineral-seaweed quality of Ambroxan anchors the composition, giving it substance beneath the initial freshness. Black pepper and violet leaf add a crisp, almost metallic edge. Papyrus and patchouli introduce an aromatic, slightly dry woodiness. The drydown is warm and intimate: musk and tonka bean create a sweet, skin-like base, while incense and saffron add smoky resinous depth. The saffron lingers longest, threading warmth through everything. Moderate sillage throughout.
Cultural impact
Versace Dylan Blue has garnered significant attention since its release, supported by a high-profile campaign featuring notable figures. The fragrance appeals to those seeking something distinctive yet approachable. It has found its place among contemporary masculine scents, resonating with men who appreciate bold branding combined with accessible fragrance design.
