The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Urban Scents launched the Vintage Spirit Collection in 2018 with a clear intention: to take the great fragrance archetypes of the past and run them through a modern lens without apologizing for what they were. Fatal/E is part of that effort, built around the foundational notes of classic chypre. Perfumer Marie Le Febvre reached for bergamot, rose, jasmine, vetiver, patchouli, and moss, the building blocks of the form, then layered in a spicy accord of cinnamon, pink pepper, black pepper, and nutmeg that the era favored. Coffee and caramel, roasted and sweet, were threaded through the heart, adding warmth that keeps the drydown from going austere. The structure holds. The vintage references remain visible, honest, unapologetic in their complexity.
The chypre structure is what gives Fatal/E its backbone. Traditionally built around a bergamot-and-labdanum top flowing into rose and jasmine over a patchouli-moss base, the form is inherently complex, one of perfumery's oldest architectures. What Urban Scents added here is a modern restlessness. Coffee and caramel were introduced into the heart notes without disrupting the structure. They borrow warmth from the spices and depth from the moss. The result is a fragrance that wears its vintage references honestly while refusing to smell like a museum piece.
The evolution
The opening hits fast, bergamot and pink pepper arrive within the first minutes, citruses cracking against the skin before the florals take over. Jasmine asserts itself and rose arrives shortly after to deepen the heart. The coffee doesn't announce itself so much as seep in, present but not dominant, sweetening the patchouli underneath. As hours pass the moss and vetiver rise to the surface, damp and earthy, pressing the florals back. The drydown is where Fatal/E earns its name. It becomes quieter, denser, a base that lingers close to the skin but refuses to disappear. On fabric the scent can hold for an extended period. On skin it tracks you into the evening with something resinous and unresolved.
Cultural impact
Fatal/E landed in 2018 as part of Urban Scents' Vintage Spirit Collection, which mapped classic fragrance archetypes through a modern lens. The collection sought to bring vintage structures into conversation with contemporary sensibilities, working with notes that have centuries of history behind them. Fatal/E embraces complexity and richness, building its chypre foundation with traditional materials and layering in unexpected warmth through coffee and caramel. The result is a fragrance that feels both rooted in perfumery's past and clearly contemporary.
